This year, the radio waves were filled with a good bit of talent, both old and new. Some songs were worthy of being played over and over, while others just made me wonder, “What were they thinking?!”. Here are my top songs of the year, along with the ones I hated most.
Stuck in My Head (in no particular order)
- Boom Boom Pow- The Black Eyed Peas- We heard a lot of this group this year, and this song was their best and most infectious by far. Even though it has been grossly over-played (as most mainstrem songs are), it is still one of my favorite songs of the year.
- Down- Jay Sean ft. Lil’ Wayne-I wasn’t hugely into hip-hop or Lil’ Wayne this year, but I always loved this song for some reason.
- Seether- Carless Whisper remake- I can’t say enough about this remake. Seether was simply the perfect band to cover it.
- Shinedown- If You Only Knew-I didn’t hear this song until recently, but it’s one of those that I can’t get out of my head! I really enjoyed the music by this band this year.
- Breaking Benjamin-I Will Not Bow- I think this is one of the best that I’ve ever heard from this band. Their new album is much better than their previous effort as well.
- Flyleaf-Again- Another infectious hit by one of my top bands, I think this song incorporates everything I love about Flyleaf.
- Skillet-Hero- The first single from their new album, and also their best song from that album in my opinion.
- Miley Cyrus-Party in the USA- I could not believe that this song was by her, because I loved it so much. This is just a fun song and I haven’t really met a girl that doesn’t like it.
- Taylor Swift-Fifteen- This song almost made me cry the first time I listened to it. I just think it’s very heartfelt and relateable for just about any girl.
What Were They Thinking?! (WTF music)
- Lady GaGa-Umm…where did this chick come from?? I mean, one day we hear “Just Dance” and everyone likes it, and the next day we’re listening to the weird “Love Games.” I just don’t get how she got to the top of the charts so quickly and I personally don’t think she has a ton of talent. Just sayin’.
- Owl City-Fireflies- The first time I heard this song, I described it on Facebook as, “teletubbies on an acid trip.” (I got a lot of criticism for that.) I just don’t see how one kid in his basement can all of a sudden get famous for mixing sounds in his basement and singing about fireflies of all things. I personally just don’t like his voice either, so that probably has something to do with my dislike of this song.
- The Black Eyed Peas-I Gotta Feeling-I absolutely HATE this song. It isn’t really upbeat and doesn’t showcase the talent of the group like the afore mentioned “Boom Boom Pow” does.
- Sean Kingston-Fire Burning- This is another song that simply repulses me. I loved his “Take You There,” but I just thought this song was terrible. The lyrics just don’t make any sense and the music is weird for me.
- Katy Perry-She faded out towards the middle of the year as Lady GaGa took over, which didn’t phase me a bit. I just don’t think her voice is talented enough to be over-played on the radio.
- Kanye West-He wins the award for the best WTF moment in music…EVER. I don’t think anything more needs to be said, honestly.
So anyway, those are my best and worst picks in music over the past year. I didn’t include artists like Beyonce in my top list because although she is very talented, she’s never been one of my favorites. I also didn’t include much country (with the exception of Taylor Swift), because I don’t listen to it enough to know what’s good and what isn’t. I do however, listen to a lot of CHR radio and love alternative music, so that’s what I tried to include. Let me know what you loved and hated about this year in music too!
